Bridget is currently attending Nordcon 13 in Gdansk so I'm standing in for her. Any errors are mine, except in the articles written by Bridget & emailed to me from foreign parts. – Roger Robinson

This year's World Fantasy Convention was held between Nov 4th-7th in Providence – the capital of America’s smallest state, Rhode Island. The Guests of Honour were the writers Charles de Lint, Robert Silverberg & Patricia McKillip and the artists Leo & Diane Dillon. The committee, mostly fans from the Boston area & members of N.E.S.F.A. also invited Samuel R Delany as their special guest & asked John M Ford to be their Toastmaster. Towards the end of the convention the World Fantasy Awards were presented as shown below. Next year the con will be held between Oct 26th-29th in Corpus Christi – in America's second largest state, Texas.

Martin Hoare and others are considering doing another Eastercon combined with a Eurocon on Jersey in 2002. First they will have to bid for the Eastercon, then the Eurocon would be bid at Gdansk in the summer. They have full backing from the Jersey Tourist authority, who for some strange reason appear to want us back...

The latest issue of Foundation: the International Review of Science Fiction (No.77) is a special issue focussing on H G Wells and The War of the Worlds. Also included are interesting & informative articles of the development of both Hellenic & Brazilian SF. More information about this issue, or indeed any other aspects of The Science Fiction Foundation can be obtained from the temporary editor of this newsletter at beccon[at]

The Zajdel Awards were presented at Nordcon 13 in Warsaw at the end of August -

Novel Rafal Ziemkiewicz – Walc stulecia (Waltz of the Century) Short Story Anna Brzezinska – “A kochal ja, ze strach” (“And he loved her, so terribly”).

After a thin patch during 1998, publishing of Polish SF novels has increased again. The 1998 crop wasn't bad, it included the award-winning Ziemkiewicz mentioned above, but 1999 has seen both quality and quantity (more than 10). Translations still appear in droves, and the turnround period is getting shorter. For the first time ever, the 1999 HugoAward novel had actually been published in Poland before it gained the award (Connie Willis – To Say Nothing of the Dog).

Nova Fantastyka and Fenix continue, both publish translations and local fiction. Magia i Miecz (Magic and Sword) is mainly a role playing game magazine, but it also publishes new fantasy stories. A new magazine Portal has recently appeared, this covers role playing games, and quite a number of new short stories. The old publishers continue, no new ones appear – perhaps this is a case of no news being good news...

The same situation can be found in the SF clubs. The odd feud goes on, but the same major clubs – Slaski, Bialystok, Gdansk remain, while new intakes of fans – most recently Manga – cause ructions in pre-existing fandom. All are agreed however that some things are a good thing... for example holding the Eurocon in Gdansk.

N. E. S. F. A. PRESS

A few years ago NESFA (The New England Science Fiction Association), based in Boston Massachusetts were a fan group who published one book per year to honour the Guest of Honour at the long-running Boskone conventions. Nowadays they are a major SF specialist press producing not only their GOH books (Michael Swanwick is their next Guest in Feb 2000), but also a series of beautifully produced retrospective collections of the unsung heroes in the field. Cordwainer Smith, James Schmitz & Zenna Henderson were among the first of these, with more recent collections of Anthony Boucher & Charles Harness. Projects currently on the production line include two more collections of Hal Clement as well as two volumes of the complete SF stories of Fredric Brown.
