James White

We are very sad to report the unexpected death of James White. James suffered a stroke on Sunday August 22 and entered a coma. He died on Monday evening. Irish fan James Shields has set up a guestbook as a James White Tribute Page for anyone who wishes to leave their thoughts. At the end of September, he will print it out and pass it on to James White’s wife Peggy.

James White was born in 1928. Having worked first as a tailor, and then as a publicity officer for an aircraft company, he is best known for his stories set in a giant galactic hospital, ‘Sector General’, a series which he started in the 1960s. He remained an active writer all his life, not shunning experimentation such as ‘The Silent Stars Go By’, a novel exploring an alternate timeline with a Hibernian Empire.

James White has a long involvement with Irish science fiction fandom, ever since the legendary Belfast days with Walt Willis and Bob Shaw. He was one of the Irish SF Association’s original patrons, and president of the current national organisation, Science Fiction Ireland. The European SF Society awarded him with “Best European Author” of 1999. His sense of humour and warm personality will be severely missed by his many friends and readers. (From Roelof Goudriaan after a text from Dave Stewart)

Jean Hoare: SF fan Jean Hoare lost her fight against cancer, and died in early August.

Eclipse: happened as expected, Cornwall overcast, Timisoara saw slivers of sun between cloud, Atlantykron got a clear view with full special effects ... guess where I was. :-(
