Right at the end of January I put up Ahrvid Engholm for a few nights. He then sent me a trip report in mixed English and Swedish. So here is part of it. British fandom seldom organize formal associations, but informal "groups". In Sweden we're more formal and have associations with boards, constituions etc. (This is related to the difference between British and Roman Law(ed.)). He was rather amused by Walthamstow – own SF shop, own SF group, own market, own local museum, own nature reserve,... Saturday, we went on a bookshop crawl: "You haven't been to London if you haven't been to bookshops." Prices are higher now, because of the stronger pound. First, Fantasy Center, then the Elephant and Castle, then Charing Cross Road. That evening, I saw the Star Trek-film on TV, but was pretty tired. I BELIEVE I almost managed to see the big final battle. I think Kirk died and Piccard said some cliches about "having had the honour to know such a great man!" (Mixture of Ahrvid & me.)
I and Dave Langford have been plagued by another – "you've had that wrong for 18 months, why didn't you correct it?". Well, if you'd told us 17 months ago, or at any point in the meantime, we might have done. It's not just foreign cons, one British con in the near future has had to have information extracted from it the way that dentists extract teeth. If it's wrong please (*&*(%&*^% tell us!
This year's Sferakon has also been designated a Euroconference (an international get-together). The con is being held from the 24t to the 26th of April. The programme will be partially in English. The convention is being held at the Faculty of Electrotechnic and Computing in Zagreb, which has a good conference center and enough space to host up to 1000 people (Sferakon usually has up to 600-700 people comming and going) Contact: Maja Cetineo --dipl.ing.
