Octocon, its normal friendly self, was held during October for what was practically certainly the last time in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoirghe, Ireland. The hotel is trying to crawl further upmarket, and doesn't want fans any more, anyway, too many of them seem to stay at the bed and breakfasts and youth hostel next door. Can't think why, the prices couldn't have had anything to do with it, could they?
GoH was Brian Stableford, also there were Kim Newman, James White, and other regular Octocon attendees. Among the highlights(?) was Michael Carroll's 'story' readings – the stories were the sort of shaggy dogs and children's fairytale jokes that will never reach print in a conventional, or even semi-conventional, fiction journal, but they were hilarious as he has a superb sense of timing and fun. He's done convention 'radio plays' in the past, dragging convention members in. I don't know what he intends perpetrating on the assembled masses at Eurocon '97, but if he does do anything, it's probably worth looking in on.
Yes, Eurocon/Octocon 1997. Well, they've booked Dublin Castle, former seat of the British Government in Ireland. Poor building: civil servants, now us... There's no accommodation at the Castle itself, I presume any dungeons have long since been put to other uses. However, there are numbers of hotels and hostels nearby, but prices aren't too good, and the reduced rates for the con don't shave much off either. I'd recommend finding out about city breaks in sunny Dublin at your local travel agent, or ringing up a place in a good guide book – the Castle is by Temple Bar, so that's the rough area you need to be in – the one I used is the Rough Guide, and I couldn't fault it. The most recent edition is dated June 1996. (Honest, I'm not on commission!)
Otherwise book through the tourist office, 'tho they will take a cut. Dublin Tourism's phone number is: +353 1 605 7777, fax: +353 1 605 7787, email: Dublin_Tourism[at]msn.com, http://www.visit.ie
Jury's Christchurch Inn (a 3 star hotel) is very close to the site. I'm not quite sure I believe the rate I see here in the Dublin Tourism Brochure – it's rather on the low side – nonetheless if you want to be close the con they are worth giving a ring: tel. +353 1 475 0111, fax +353 1 475 0488
If you're feeling broke there are numbers of independent hostels in Dublin, and an An Oige official hostel. If you're feeling desperate, the campsite at Shankill will be open then, 'tho it only makes financial sense if you cram your tent well...
Oh yes, and of course I guess I'd better say that this should not be considered to be official information either from the con itself or from ESFS – after all, the con has employed an accommodation bureau!TTFN

If you spot an ommission, a mistake, or other some such in this list, please don't just mutter to your friends, TELL ME!. The only way to get a list like this right is to constantly correct it, and nothing is worse than some dimwit who come up and says "Oh, I noticed that typo six months ago – I just thought you meant it to be that way..." Thanks!!!!
Fans Across the World Many thanks for information etc. to: Vlatko Juric-Kokic, Joan Manel Ortiz, John Bark, the Cascais committee, Robert Elliot, Dave Lally, David Stewart, Roger Robinson, Dave Langford, and others for help and information.
