The Finnish SF semiprozine has just celebrated its 20th anniversary with an edition with large chunks in colour. A mix of book reviews, film reviews, DVD reviews, comic strips, short stories both Finnish and translated, games, essays, and conreports. It is published by the Helsinki Science Fiction Society and usually has about 85 pages, there are four issues a year. For most of the last twenty years it has been edited by Toni Jerrman. Tahivaeltaja's translations and articles on foreign authors have often been their first appearance in Finland. As the main national SF magazine it also carries advertising for local SF bookshops, SF conventions, and new SF books.
Well, there was an English summary from which I got much of that. My Finnish isn't that good, in fact it's even worse than my...
Hungarian SF history in the last twenty years has been very different. The SF magazine Galaktika which had survived the socialist era collapsed in 1995 from competition with new publishers, fantasy books, role playing games – much of this stuff was of very poor quality, but there were only so many readers and the fall in numbers made the magazine uneconomic.
The new publishers were deeply conservative, playing safe with names like Asimov, Feist, King, etc. Practically no new western authors were published, let alone locals. A similar collapse affected Hungarian fandom. A fan organisation Avana (from a city in an SF book by Peter Zsoldos) was set up to promote contact between the scattered SF groups and to coordinate the national convention Hungarocon. Other activities were the establishment of two SF awards, the Zsoldos award and the Hugo Preyer award, and the setting up of an internet site. And that is how I first came into contact with this group of fans – via www.scifi.hu. They now also have a section in English http://www.scifi.hu/english, and I suggest you try that!
Earlier this year, they set up a very nicely produced SF magazine – A5, good quality paper ('tho only the cover is in colour). Much of it is stories, most of them in translation, with a bias towards fantasy. In addition to this there are book reviews, film reviews, and SF news from all over the place as fillers. The stories are not just translated from English – the issue I have here includes one by Herbert Franke. There are few advertisements, but they include SF cons, books and PC magazines. (Yes, I got an English summary for this one too, but I could also find my way round it...).

Two fans from this society turned up at the Eurocon in the Czech Republic. Young, and very enthusiastic. The society has been in existence since 1996, has run several conventions, held lectures, film showings, and publishes and SF fanzine (The Tenth Dimension). It also operates an on-line magazine in Hebrew. Members are of all types and ages. Contact ISSFF, POB 21656, Tel Aviv, 61216, Israel, or look at http://sf-f.org.il.
This is a new email zine by Pádraig Ó Méalóid. It is very lively. For example, would you believe a graphic novel in the Irish language? AN SCLÁBHAÍ, published by Cló Mhaigh Eo.
If you are interested order it from Forbidden Planet, Dublin. I doubt the one in London is stocking it. He also covers day events all over Ireland, fairs, etc. many of them marginally SF or fantasy, but what the hell!
