Stephen Jay Gould

The palaeontologist Stephen Jay Gould died on the 20th of May at his house in New York, at the age of 61 years, after many years fighting cancer. Well known for his scientific essays, he also wrote about the sub-genre of SF that reconstructed pre-historic eras.

While he had considerable sympathies for past scientists now deeply out of fashion and some thinkers regarded now, or even in their own times, as cranks, he was also one of the few scientists prepared to openly confront the creationists in their attempts to suppress the teaching of evolution in US schools.

What has this to do with SF? Well, at least we are capable of telling the difference between science and fiction.

Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award

The Swedish government has announced the creation of an Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for children's authors (or organisations involved in children's literature), worth 5 000 000 SEK (500,000 dollars). This is probably the largest award for children's authors in the world (and half the value of a Nobel prize).

Astrid Lindgren was buried on March the 8th in a ceremony aired on Swedish television.

The first winner of the Astrid Lindgren Award (financed by the cultural department of the Swedish government) will be announced before the 8th of March 2003. (From Ahrvid Engholm)

Eurocon 2002

Is located this year in Prague (1.-3. July) and Chotebor (3.-7. July) in the Czech Republic. See You would now have to pay on the door, but could probably still get accommodation, etc. Contact the organisers if you are interested.

The program includes Parcon – the Czech and Slovak national con, Avalcon, Gamecon, also events on Star Trek, Star Wars, Fantastic Facts, Discworld, Lord of Rings, and Babylon 5. Very much a meeting of all types of SF fans.

The GOHs are George R.R.Martin, Robert Holdstock, William King, Kir Bulycov (much translated Russian SF writer) and Andrzej Sapkowski (much translated Polish fantasist).

Numbers of the events will be in English, and there will be several sight-seeing trips away fro the con, besides the first bit in Prague. (From Vaclav Pravda)
