British SF

'2001 a celebration of British SF' was the title of the conference in Liverpool last week (end June). Most talked about authors were Ken MacLeod and John Wyndham (The SF Foundation at Liverpool University has recently acquired the Wyndham archive, and it is being mined). I was particularly struck by papers on Tom Disch, Ian MacDonald/James White, and some of the Wyndham and MacLeod papers.

Stephen Baxter decided that the audience needed introducing to the joys of football (soccer) for his after dinner speech on Friday evening. This particularly dazed the Americans on my table...
